Castle Beams
Whether your passion is walking, cycling, historical heritage, shopping, enjoying fine food and wine .... the area near and around Hopton Castle is the perfect base.
Castle Beams overlooks what is left of the medieval Hopton Castle, and is in the grounds of The Old Granary which is probably 400+ years old, being built around 1600. Originally part of Lower House Farm, the large timbered house you can see to the west, Castle Beams was probably a Byre, housing cattle, and later the stables for the farm. It was probably constructed in the second half of the 17th century, with an extension added in the Victorian era.
The property lies at the centre of the hamlet, which is full of historic, listed buildings from the 15th to 17th centuries. As well as the castle ruins there is a pretty, small Victorian church, St. Edwards, at the western edge of the village with a small graveyard containing a cast-iron commemorative monument from 1686. Even the ex-public phone box, housing the defibrillator, is a listed building!
The Titterhill which rises to the south is owned by the Forestry Commission and is full of cycle tracks, which attract people from all over the country, and there are many footpaths criss-crossing the area. On the other side of the hill is Wales, and Knighton, the gateway to the beautiful mid-Wales region.
Leintwardine , about 4 miles away, is the nearest sizeable village, with two pubs, a fish and chip shop, garage, a petrol station with a small shop and a very good butcher.
Craven Arms is a small functional market town with an independent supermarket and most of the shops you might need. Slightly further away (12 miles) is Ludlow, the main town of south Shropshire, which is a bustling place with great restaurants, a thriving market, a host of independent shops and a much bigger castle!
Shrewsbury and Hereford are both about 45 minutes drive and are both worth a visit as county towns with lots of history, shopping and other amenities. Towards Shrewsbury, at Church Stretton, is The Burway which is an adventurous road that sneaks its way up and over the top of the Long Mynd, a rolling scenery of wind-whipped moorland which is one of the most beautiful places in England.
